Who we are
APPLE AND OAT LTD is a software engineering company. We design, build and maintain custom applications, cloud platforms, integrations and data systems for organisations that rely on software to run their operations.
Our work is deliberately unglamorous in the best sense: careful requirements, readable code, tested behaviour, documented decisions and support after release. We describe what a system does and does not do, and we avoid claims that engineering practice cannot honestly support.
Mission
To build software that remains understandable, reliable and changeable for the people who depend on it — long after the initial delivery is finished.
02 — Principle
Working principles
We start from the problem rather than the technology. Before proposing an architecture we spend time understanding the process a system is meant to support, the constraints around it and the people who will use it every day.
Work is delivered incrementally, in pieces small enough to review honestly. Decisions are written down, including the ones we later revise, so the reasoning behind a system remains available to everyone involved.
We prefer boring, well-supported technology over novelty, and we say plainly when a request carries risk, cost or uncertainty that has not yet been accounted for.
03 — Principle
Approach to technology
Technology choices are made for fit: the size of the problem, the expected load, the skills of the team who will live with the result and the maintenance window available. A stack that is elegant but unmaintainable in context is the wrong stack.
We keep boundaries between components explicit, so parts of a system can be replaced without rewriting everything around them. Configuration, infrastructure and deployment steps are described in code rather than in tribal knowledge.

Quality standards
Automated tests are written alongside features, not retrofitted at the end. Changes go through review, continuous integration runs on every commit, and releases are reproducible.
Observability is treated as part of the product: logging, metrics and error reporting are built in so that behaviour in production can be explained rather than assumed. Defects are tracked openly and fixed with a test that prevents their return.
05 — Principle
Security and privacy mindset
We identify at design time what data a system will hold, who should be able to reach it and what the consequences of exposure would be. Access control, secret management, encryption in transit and validated inputs are default requirements.
Personal data is minimised: we collect what a feature genuinely needs and retain it only as long as the purpose requires. Dependencies are kept current, and known vulnerabilities are treated as work items rather than background noise.
06 — Principle
Collaboration model
Engagements run on one shared backlog with visible priorities. Clients see the same board, the same estimates and the same open questions as the engineers doing the work.
We can work as the delivery team for a complete system, as an extension of an existing internal team, or in an advisory capacity on architecture and technical direction. Whatever the shape, artefacts are produced so that ownership can transfer cleanly at any point.
